Ueno Zoo

Great weather today so I headed to the north-eastern part of Tokyo and visited Ueno Zoo. It's not a very big zoo but the main attraction is the two panda bears it has.

Below is a selection of photos that I took. More photos can be viewed in my Flickr photo album.

Ri Ri the male panda.

Shin Shin the female panda. She wouldn't come close to the glass.

I felt bad for the polar bear. The enclosure was a fairly good size, but there was nothing natural about it. It was all cement. The bear was agitated (or frustrated) and just pacing back and forth.

Then I saw the enclosure for the three elephants and was nearly sick to my stomach. Not a lot of room for even one elephant. No trees. No grass. Just a single big fake (cement) rock in the middle.
